Meet the Author
Writer, educator, missionary — and the heart behind Girtie.

Doris Rudd Whitfield is a down-to-earth woman who simply loves God. For over thirty years she has written poetry, prayers, a dramatization of the modern-day life of Job, and a love song to God.
Born and raised in Washington, D.C. in a Christian home with six siblings, Doris comes from three generations of preachers and is herself a missionary for Jesus Christ. Her calling into missions was foretold by her father, Reverend William Rudd, before she was born.
In the early 1990s, Doris received formal missions training and field preparation. It was during this season that she met and bonded with a real blind bird named Girtie — a bond that continues to inspire her writing and the life-changing lessons she shares.
After more than forty years of employment in both the public and private sectors, Doris retired and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a master’s in Public Administration. A lifelong learner, she especially enjoys discovering ways to boost emotional intelligence in children and young people.
Doris loves nature, long walks, reading scripture, poetry, music, and dancing. She delights in time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and with children, young people, and the elderly alike. She lives in Maryland with her loving husband Wayne, her biggest fan, and looks forward to writing many more books for children and adults with a child-like heart.
